Once upon a time, the wind turned cold and all the bugs disappeared. The nighttime was quieter and the sunshine less friendly. I blew the dust off my sock drawer and the freezer was emptied of popsicles. My sandals went into hiding and the windows stayed shut. The green outside faded and I found my hands inside my pockets more often than usual. People trickled away from the out of doors and the rest of us kept our heads down. A slow gloom waved by our faces. I dragged my feet and hunched my shoulders. Hi winter. You're back.
