I have a real problem with past/passed. Sometimes i just have no idea which one to use. This animated emoticon basically sums up my dilemma:
Also: I know i said i would stop using emoticons but it's harder than you think!!! don't judge me. I'm trying. Plus, that one's just fun.

Funny you should bring this up because I was just pondering the same thing. I think "past" equals the element of time..."in the past." And "passed" is the verb "I passed the test" and "passed by the store."
