Favorites

Favorite is such a great word.  Of all the words, it's like the favorite word.  <-- i know. think on that for a minute.   It's just a happy one. My nephew once called his favorite blankie "Favorite."  Best name ever.  I've been thinking of my favorite things these days and it cheers me up to do so. (I'm into lists lately, but then, who isn't.)   Read some of my current favorites and give me some of yours!

Favorite...

Smell: lilacs. I really think it might be my most favorite smell of all the smells. I went to the botanic gardens recently and i rediscovered this drug of a scent.

Pen: Pilot G-2.  Is there anything better? Seriously.

Recent lines on TV:    on Golden Girls last night:

"Eat dirt and drop dead, Trash!"

I'm just waiting for an opportunity to use this on someone. Will it be you? Only time will tell. And you should be so lucky. [bonus point: who said it?]

Also, watching a BBC show, a young bullied but tough girl shoved her female classmate against the wall with her fists in the bully's face:  "See these? They smell like dead girls. Think on!"   Also waiting to use this one.. sort of.

Hand soap: Mrs. Meyer's.  I love her. She smells so good, in all her varieties.
Shower soap: Dove Sensitive Skin

Song: basically any song Julian sings. He has a lovely singing voice but also, he often chooses his own lyrics which are: "bus."  That's all.  Like,  Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with just "bus."   Picture it. Sing it right now. So funny (and innovative).

Movie: Confessions of a Shopaholic. Yep, I just said that. Alright, obviously that's not my favorite of ALL TIME, but I do like it and it is a mega-guilty pleasure. It's just funny to me, alright? and it's been on TV a lot lately and i keep staying on it and watching it and I don't know why. I'm so ashamed. But at least i'm honest.

and on that note, Man celebrity:  Hugh Dancy.  He-LLO.

War: WWII.   Lately I've been reading a lot of books and things set during WWII and I really love it. I love stories of hiding from and escaping the Nazis.  And about the way people thought during that time, people's individual, personal stories. I am just fascinated. It's almost surreal to me. Every time I spend some time reading, thinking and learning about it I wonder, how did that happen??  And stories of survival and people's will to live always inspire me.  In fact, I finished my book and am desperate for a new one. I think it's time for a little Man's Search for Meaning.

Sandwich: Peanut butter & banana. An old classic. I like to mush up the banana inside the peel and then ooze it out and spread it on the slice.  It's preferable to use a mini-banana.   I also like to make it on these, and then slice it like a tiny pizza. The fun never ends in our house.

  1. Lilac is the best, hands down. Sad that they are only with us for such a short time...

  2. Peanut butter and banana sandwiches- you're talkin' my language. WWII books- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Man's Search For Meaning, it is not. A great little WWII novel, it is. In fact, I saw someone on the subway reading it yesterday. Surely a good sign.

  3. You have a favorite war? Something just seems off about that to me. Mind you, I do find war history interesting, but it seems like the word "favorite" should be reserved for things that are less deadly...

Lilacs. Always been my favorite. Bath and Body works used to have a lilac scent that was PERFECT a few years ago. They discontinued it and now have a different one, but it's not as good. It was a sad day when I couldn't find it anymore.

Bonus Point: it had to be Sophia. No one else was quite as snarky.

  4. WWII is my favorite war toooooo!

I did just finish "The Good Soldiers" which is about the Surge in the Iraq war. I was suddenly shamed that I know SOOO much more about WWII.

I read Man's Search for Meaning 5 times in the tenth grade! I think I deserve a bonus point for that. It's amazing to me that my parents let these 'quirks' slide.

Favorite Smell: Satsuma. Trust me. It kicks lilac's trash.

    xo,
A - your favorite friend (awkward)

  5. G-2 pens are good, but I like Sarasa and Mujirushi pens even better (AND there's a muji store in New York City, so you're in luck!!! totally go check them out and buy a bunch of pens. You'll love them!).

I'm with you on the Dove soap and WWII. I absolutely love the book Winds of War by Hermann Wouk, along with its sequel, War and Remembrance. Those books blow me away. Or if you're in the mood for something a little easier to read (but still heavy), the Maus comics are really cool, too.

I also agree about lilac scent. The only thing that MIGHT be able to compare is orange blossom, but that one's harder to come by...

My favorite movie is probably About a Boy. Or Bend It Like Beckham...

  6. Those are good favorites, thanks for sharing! Here's another book suggestion for you: If you're enjoying WWII books, you have to read "Unbroken!" It's really an incredible book, although it doesn't mention the Nazis much. It's all about the Pacific part of the war, which we really kind of tend to forget in our history books. It's a very well written and fascinating book!

  7. I've heard of that one. I love all these recommendations! Keep it coming. I seriously can't get enough these days. Did you see Letters From Iwojima? Seriously depressing.
