Gasoline...followed by be strike anywhere matches. But why would that be in your cupboard...let alone in the same cupboard? But it WOULD be worse than peppermint.
Unless you are my son, who is overly sensitive to peppermint oil for some reason, his eyes immediately sting and he screams. I am glad for you that is was not something worse.
My mother used to make her own cinnamon suckers. They were delicious. You want to know what else is delicious? The smell of the cinnamon extract she had to use to make said suckers have flavor. The smell was so good that I wanted to smell like it. So, like any self-respecting perfume wearer, I put two dabs just behind my ears. 5 seconds later it starts BURNING. Big time! And that crap does not wash off! It hurt so bad. Smelling like cinnamon was just not worth it.
Unfortunately, this happened not too long ago. Probably within the last 5 years.
That peppermint extract may smell good, but think before you put it behind your ears.
What wonderful, long lasting airfreshener. One of the worst things to come tumbling out of the spice cupboard... cornstarch... like the flour, not much fun to clean up.

Which leads us to the question of what the worst thing would be. In my case, it would be flour, because it always makes such a mess.
Anything alive would be the worst thing: mice, cockroaches, ants. I'm shivering just thinking about it.
Having your house smell like peppermint could be kind of nice, actually!
