Sometimes I perform such an impeccable parallel parking job, it's actually breathtaking. Like, it's not just a skill, it's a talent, and to witness it would be a standout moment in one's life. It's in a pretty tight spot with almost no room for error (as if I needed it). My motions are swift and exact. It's flawless and dare I say spectacular, and so much so, that I want to exclaim to any around me, "did you see that?? did you see what I just did? That deserves applause, people! I...am amazing!!"
And then, after my moment of relish, I try to get out of the car with my seat belt still on.

Love this. I could barely parallel park when I drove an old (and therefore, very small) Honda Civic. There's no WAY I'm trying it with my mini-van! And somehow it seems like parallel parking in New York would be even harder-- there's bound to be people honking or wanting you to hurry up or possibly a bike messenger or homeless guy in the way or something to add to the stress, right?

Parking is so much a part of my life, I could literally spend my days talking about it and never tire. The ins, the outs (HAHA), the battles of good vs. evil, the conflict, the journeys. I shall write a book some day. Or a blog post.
One time I successfully parallel parked Suburban with a 15 ft trailer attached (first try and tight space). --Go back and read that sentence again to soak it in.
I did the same as you, I looked around for anyone to high five, expecting to see a crowd of open mouthed observers.
But no, just people walking by carrying on with their stupid little lives, the awesomeness that just occurred unnoticed, unappreciated.
